first design

1. Color ( click for full version ) : Flush-left, Horizontal navigation
Fields of color. Really liked the typography a former professor of mine used on a site for interdisciplinary new media work, the TAM Certificate, and also took a cue from the layout there.
Typeface is Lucida Grande for computers that have it (it's great).
Splat logo is used as a design element with a bookshelf in the background - thinking about the experience of reading and writing.

second design

2. Dark ( click for full version ) : Flush-left, Vertical navigation (with bright rollovers)
Inspired by the dark layouts at Drunken Boat and Counterpath Press, links my client gave me of sites she liked.
Logo "ink splat" has been rotated, changed to all caps with a modern font, and made one color. 'Georgia' is the serif typeface for the body text.
Road image from flyer is used here.

third design

3. White ( click for full version ) : Centered, Horizontal navigation
Navigation and headers are set in lower case. Kids these days, they like their communication understated.
Logo splat has been significantly scaled down, and Creative Writing Program initials are used instead of full spelling. The typeface for the initials is Estilo, which has a 30's style art deco feel, though it came out in 2005.
Inspired by CWP at University of Georgia. Minimal, with areas of strong color.
